Liposuction of the buttock region is used to correct small bulges of fat that persist even after diet and exercise. We use the smallest possible cannulas or tubes during the procedure to prevent the contour defects and irregularities that may occur when too large a cannula is used. The insicions, which are about 1/8th of an inch wide are made in inconspicuous areas which are seldom noticeable when the healing process is complete. Liposuction will permanently remove the fat cells in this area.
One of the major risks associated with any surgery is that the patient may react adversely to the anaesthesia and/or other drugs prescribed during surgery. Lidocaine is commonly injected into the liposuction site. A patient may experience light-headedness, restlessness, drowsiness, slurred speech, a metallic taste in the mouth, numbness, shivering, muscle twitching, and convulsions. Lidocaine in toxic amounts may cause the heart to stop. Infection is another major risk. The wounds must be kept clean, especially if they are in close proximity to the anus. Antibiotics and other medicines that are prescribed must be taken regularly. Since fat is removed from the body, a patient may experience signs of fluid imbalance which can lead to heart problems, fluid collection in the lungs, or kidney problems.
After buttock liposuction, the patient can expect swelling and bruising in the buttock region, which may gravitate to other areas of the body in close proximity to the buttocks. The buttock liposuction site may also become either more or less sensitive, or even numb. These changes in sensation tend to return to normal after a few days, but if they do not the doctor should be notified. Medication can be prescribed for any post operative pain, and specialized compression garments can be used both as support and to relieve swelling. The patient must remember that due to the loss of fluid, they may feel faint if they stand or sit up too quickly. They must restrict themselves to slower movements. Dehydration must be prevented by drinking plenty of water. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided, as alcohol may cause dehydration as well as interfere with some medications. Liposuction in the buttock area will take longer to recover from than liposuction procedures in other areas, as the buttock region is very active in daily bodily activities such as walking, running, sitting, and even standing. While other liposuction procedures may take as little as a week to recover from, healing from a liposuction procedure in the buttock region may require twice this time.
